-AMBASSADOR EXTRAORDINARY AND PLENIPOTENTIARY

Ambassador Omar Lisandro Castañeda Solares, joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala on April 18, 2005. He is a career diplomat with a wide experience in multilateral affairs. He has served his country Guatemala since 2005 in different positions such as Third Secretary in the Directorate General of Protocol, Second and First Secretary in the Directorate General of Multilateral Relations; Minister Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Guatemala to the United Nations in New York from 2009-2015 and Deputy Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the United Nations since 2016-2022. Ambassador Omar Castañeda Solares was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Guatemala to India in December 2022 and presented his letters of credence to Her Excellency Smt. Droupadi Murmu on February 15 2023.

Ambassador Omar Castañeda Solares holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the Complutense University of Spain and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala.

During the tenure of Guatemala in the Security Council 2012-2013, Ambassador Omar Castañeda Solares, was the expert in charge of different thematic geographic areas in Africa, particularly covering the following countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, South Sudan and Central African Republic. He was also a Press Officer for the Permanent Mission of Guatemala, during the membership in the United Nations Security Council 2012-2013.

As Deputy Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the United Nations in New York from 26016-2022 he was responsible for the active participation of Guatemala in the different six Committees of the General Assembly as well in other forums of the United Nations, including the Open Debates in the Security Council. Among the main achievements of his diplomatic experience at the United Nations, are the following: Vice-Chair of the Bureau of the Fifth Committee during the 70 session of the General Assembly, representing the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC), in charge of the decision making process for establishing the Programme of work, coordinators, facilitators and guiding the work of the 5th Committee; Coordinator of political negotiations during the Guatemalan presidency of the 5th Committee of the General Assembly, 65 session of the General Assembly; Representative of Guatemala in the Special Committee for Peacekeeping and Vicechair of the Executive Board of UNICEF (2019), representing the Group of Latin American and the Caribbean Countries.

Ambassador Omar Castañeda Solares is a member of the Fellowship UNITAR-International Peace Institute Fellowship Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy, from Oslo, Norway.

Ambassador Omar Castañeda Solares speaks, writes and understands Spanish and English. He has studies in French and Arabic. Besides his professional activities, he is a professional radio host and also enjoys water sports, swimming and cultural activities.
