About Cobán
Coban is the capital of the department of Alta Verapaz, of the Republic of Guatemala, located 219 km away from Guatemala City. Its name comes from a word of the language Q’eqchi ‘, which means “the clouds” since the region is very rainy and is very common to have a perennial drizzle that can last several days called by the locals “chipi chipi”. One of the main events in Coban is the half marathon, that started in 1974, on the third weekend of May. For this marathon there are more than 6,000 runners from around the world that participate. The event is known for a world-class organization and is one of the largest sporting events in Guatemala and in Latin America.
