About Takalik Abaj National Park
This archaeological site is located in the municipality of El Asintal, in the department of Retalhuleu. Its history embraces two millenniums of growth, peak, conflicts and resurgence (Medium Preclassic Period 800 A.C. and Post Classic Period 900 D.C.).
The construction is divided in three main groups. One of these areas is the Central Group, where Estela 5 can be found, one the earliest temples of the Mayan area. Among the constructions that can be found is an example of an ancient sauna, 85 registered edifications and 282 Olmeca, Mayan and local styled sculptural monuments.
The visitors can come witness how the Mayas successfully built an astronomic observatory and potable water hydraulic distribution systems and developed early Mayan writing. Admission fee: nationals Q. 5.00, foreigners Q. 50.00. It is open all year long form 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
