About Esquipulas and the Basilica of Esquipulas
Esquipulas: this little village in the department of Chiquimula, is considered as the Central Capital of Faith. Throughout its history the city has been blessed by the holy Image of the Black Christ of Esquipulas, that is revered by hundreds of pilgrims from Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The most important day of the Village of Esquipulas is January 15, date in which the city shows the love and faith that parishioners to the blessed image of the Holy Christ of Esquipulas. Another important event in Esquipulas is the Caravan of Zorro, in which pilgrims come in motorcycle out of the capital city to visit the miraculous Christ Black.
The Basilica of Esquipulas: It is the main tourist attraction in the town of Esquipulas. Inside this monumental Basilica lies the Miraculous Image of the Holy Black Christ of Esquipulas, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims. The Holy Black Christ of Esquipulas is revered in Central America and Mexico mostly. The sculptor of the Holy Black Christ of Esquipulas was Quirio Cataño and he finished this sculpture on March 9, 1595. The Basilica of Esquipulas has 3 naves, with a dome that gives natural lighting inside, the atrium is bounded by 6 columns or pilasters. It was declared a historical and artistic monument on June 12, 1970. The interior has silver lamps.
